I'm on the road early Thursday AM to head south for the bay area and San Francisco Wondercon (where they'll have this snazzy Iron Man 2 print)!
This will be my fifth year doing the show I think, and I always look forward to it, it's a great show (run by the fine folks that do San Diego Comic-Con).
Last year I carpooled with a great group of artist friends, but none of them were able to make it back to the show this year, so now I'm doing the trip with some new friends.
I'll be in artist alley (space 71), selling books (the Super Real graphic novel, SRG Presents, Pulp Girls, Zombie Tramp, and more), doing sketches, selling prints, and having a good time!
Here are some sketches I did two weeks ago at Emerald City con!
And here's a new fan art collaboration I'll have as well.
In addition to all that, I'm also bringing down a portrait my friend Javier Hernandez did of our Chihuahua, Choco, as he's doing a gallery show in San Fran the same weekend!
My first sketch card work since Marvel Masterpieces is for 5finity's Dead@17 series (based on Josh Howard's comic series of the same name), which came out on 3/15.
I did 24 cards for the set, and got 2 return cards to keep/sell.
The first return card has already sold on eBay, this card, featuring main character Nara in her schoolgirl outfit with axe, from the original series...
The fine folks at 5finity (makers of premium collectors sketch cards) are releasing a card set for Josh Howard's Dead@17 on 3/15, and I did cards for the set.
Here's a peek at two cards I did...
And I'll have 2 return cards to sell for this set (one of which is the card pictured above on the left).
I'll post more info on this once I have it.
I'll also be doing a couple more sets for 5finity coming up!
My artwork included in the 2010 Adult Swim calendar, which featured comic style takes on the AS shows, and featured my fan art for Molotov Coqtiz from Venture Brothers, is now available in the Adult Swim online store HERE
Check out the previous post for a look at the artwork and pics of the calendar HERE
Earlier this year I did a Venture Brothers (the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim animated series) fan art featuring Molotov Cocktease, as a faux old school comic book cover, and as fans of the show tend to be a bit rabid (it's a good, quirky show), the image was rather popular... fast forward to this fall, and I was contacted by Adult Swim, who were interested in using the image for a 2010 Adult Swim calendar they were putting together.
So that's cool.
They explained the calendar was going to feature each of the different AS shows, as a different comic book style cover each month, so this was a perfect fit.
Now, I recently was sent a couple copies of the calendar, and the theme is more "comics", as in strip, page or image, than covers, but there you go.
They just recently put the calendars on the AS site (and all the promo stuff I've seen feature my image), but I still haven't seen them posted in the store. You can currently try to win a copy HERE
The calendars aren't mass marketed or anything, just available directly from AS on their site, and as soon as that's posted, I'll link to it.
Also, they mentioned possibly making some prints out of the images, but I haven't heard or seen anything more on that.
In the meantime, you can take a look at the artwork (above), and some a pics of the calendar (below, with crappy old digital cam)...
Last night I made a folder in my DeviantArt gallery full of original sketches, fan arts, pinups and more that've been kicking around my office the last couple years, that I'm looking to get rid of for rock bottom prices... HERE
I've already sold several things, so take a peek if you've ever wanted to pick up some of my art. I'll continue to add things over the weekend. Trying to raise a little holiday cash... And speaking of the 2009 sketchbooks, I got the itch to do some new fan arts, so I posted 3 copies of the sketchbooks on eBay with sketches in them (of cool characters I've never drawn before), you can bid on those now:
Fans of Josh Howard's Dead@17 series keep your eyes peeled for the first Image series, Dead@17 Afterbirth, the 4 issue trade paperback collection due this December (pre-order now).
I'll have a pinup in the book, done in a faux old school cover style, and here's a peek at that, minus the graphics
I'll be in Chicago (Rosemont, IL) all weekend for the big comic show, formerly Wizard World Chicago, now called Chicago Comic-Con.
The show starts Thursday 8/6, for preview night, and runs through Sunday 8/9.
I'll be exhibiting in artist alley, space 4228.
I'll have the new Pulp Girlsconvention books (limited to 250 copies, and going going), the Pulp Girls limited silk screen print (limited to 150 copies), Super Real comics, SRG Presents Gnome and Wolves of Odin books, fan art prints, sketchbooks, and more! Of course I'll have and be doing sketches. Also, I'll have copies of my buddy Dan Mendoza's Comic-Con sellout, ZOMBIE TRAMP, in a new "SR DISTRO" printing (SR Distro is a new direct sales distribution model I might try out)!!!
Lots of cool stuff!
Can't wait for the show, and to see all the cool friends, fans, and comic book fiends!
I may even get to check out Chi-town a bit on Monday before my flight (fun fact, I was born in East Chicago) ;) and of course deep dish pizza, and White Castles are on my to-do list (along with maybe seeing some family).
Phew, I'm worn out just thinking about it!
See ya there!
Here's a couple pre-done sketches I'll have at the show and a sample of the Pulp Girls convention book sketch page (and sketch):
I'll be at the world famous Emerald City Comicon this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, in rainy dreary Seattle, exhibiting in the artist alley! Come by, say hey, and look over prints, sketchbooks, comics, art, or get a sketch!
This was a con sketch preorder for my version of the James Jean golden age Sally Jupiter pinup from the Watchmen movie...
SUPER REAL NOTES: Marvel Masterpieces 2 artist proof cards
My first sketch card work was for Upper Deck's Marvel Masterpieces series 2, for which I did 200 sketch cards. As part of the payment for the set, each sketch card artist received 10 "artist proof" sketch cards to do what they wished with. I received my cards back in August, and posted commission availability here, on DeviantArt, and on the Scoundrel sketch card forums. I received 3 commissions, and sold 1 via eBay.
Since I had 6 cards left to sell, and a deadline to get them approved by Upper Deck/Marvel, I went ahead and tried doing my first 2 card set, making one image across 2 cards, and offering that on eBay. I was pleased to sell those cards within a couple hours of posting via buy it now, a set of the classic Uncanny X-Men, so I decided to work up another 2 card set for eBay. This time I did a grouping of Avengers women, and those sold by the next morning. With 2 cards left, I went ahead and did a third 2 card set, with this last being of women from the X-Men. Those cards are currently (at this time) on eBay, HERE and HERE
Here are all of the MM2 artist proofs I've done (the final 10th card is commissioned, and I'll add it here once it's completed): X-Women Avengers Women Uncanny X-Men Banshee Professor X and Nova!
You can view most of my 200 MM2 series sketch cards HERE (or in my DeviantArt gallery)
I did 75 sketch cards for series 3, which you can view HERE, and will have 10 artist proof cards to share from that eventually as well. I've currently only sold one of those, so nine are still available (email me if interested). Just as with the MM2 ap's, I'll start auctioning off my own custom works on eBay...
Since the artist proof's have been working out pretty well, I look forward to working on more sketch cards in the future. It's not only fun to draw Marvel characters, as I'm a Marvel guy from way back, but working on the 2.5x3.5" canvas, in live media, is very interesting too (as opposed to working digitally on an open canvas). Not to mention, there are plenty of other cool card/licensed properties out there!
I completed 75 cards for Upper Deck's Marvel Masterpieces 3 (out in November?), all of which were approved.
Here are the cards (6 different sets; Wolverines, Spider-Men, Things, Iron Man armors, Annihilation Conquest, and Guardians of the Galaxy): I have my 10 artist proof cards in hand, some still available, $75ea. Just let me know if you're interested!
Marvel Masterpieces 2 ARTIST PROOF Sketch Cards available
I recently got my 10 artist proof sketch cards back from Upper Deck, these are the rarest cards of the set, the ones they send to participating sketch card artists for the Marvel Masterpieces 2 card set.
I have 8 of these currently available, and am offering them to fans/friends of the blog for $100ea for a full color card, as opposed to the normal $125 (plus shipping).
You can pick any Marvel character as long as they aren't licensed (GI Joe etc) or based on other media (movies, TV) and adhere to the rules (no nudity, smoking etc), and the cards must also be approved by Marvel before shipping.
If you're interested in getting one of these cards, send me an email with the subject TSL proof card to: jason@superrealgraphics.com
Here are some samples from the apporxamitley 200 cards I did for the set:
You can also view most the cards from the set HERE
There's also a commission card up for grabs on eBay too if you prefer that route HERE
PERSONAL SKETCH CARDS - Star Wars The Clone Wars on eBay
Haven't seen STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS yet, but got the bug to do some quick sketch cards yesterday... They're up on eBay now (well most of them are still there). I've got a cool fan art that I've been meaning to do, roughed out, but haven't found the time, maybe after I see the movie...
I wish it could be as cool as most of the Genndy Clone Wars cartoons, but it likely won't. I've tried to avoid reviews, so we'll see. Can't wait regardless!
I recently had the pleasure of doing a full blown multi character commission, with the request being that it had a similar vibe to my Cloverfield fan art, a group shot in an urban setting... but with zombies!
The requester didn't even want specific zombies, ie Cloverfield cast, superheroes, etc, just regular zombies. So to wrap my mind around it, I decided to use one of my actual pics from my recent NYCC trip, and the idea started to come to life, using a pic from Times Square, it would be "zombies on Broadway"!
Specifically, using this pic The next challenge was what would inspire my zombies? Now, I've drawn some before (most notably an unused zombie variant of the issue 3 cover for Super Real special number 1), but not enough to just crank out the cool zombie action, so I needed a little direction to avoid some generic looking zombies... Then it occured to me to use whatever current pop culture stuff was rattling around my brain... and this was a few weeks back and I'd just watched the EliteXC MMA Saturday Night Fights on CBS, and brawler Kimbo Slice seemed the perfect subject!
From there, the rest of the zombies fell in place... Zombie Downey JR, fresh off his triumphant appearance at the MTV movie awards
Zombie Lohan, also at the MTV awards, seemed a natural (and was really fun)! But that left me wanting to do one more zombie, and fresh out of inspiration... then it hit me, myself as a zombie of course!
And so you have the final piece, with our cast of zombies making their way down Broadway... along with some adjustments to the pic... Check it out!
Big thanks to the client for paying me to play with zombies, it was really fun!
If you're as big a Lost fan as me, then last night was a big one. The show is top notch all around, but they really go all out with each season finale, from blowing the lids of mysterious hatches, to giant 4 toed statue foot remnants, to mind bending flash forwards... the finales pack a wallop.
So how about season 4, last nights wrap up?
While not as crazy as season 2 or 3, it is a slow burner, stacked with plenty, and plenty, of tasty morsels.
I won't go into all of it, but man, I'm still in love with this show, and can't wait (8 months) for more!
If you follow the show and haven't checked it out yet EW.com's Doc Jensen is an indispensable source of scholarly Lost knowledge, check out season 4's finale wrap up HERE
Haven't posted much lately, been real busy, working on many things, but if you have checked in here lately, you know I've been doing sketch cards. Both for Marvel Masterpieces, and also custom cards to sell.
Well, I recently took some of the custom cards I'd done, and created mini prints, actual card size (2.5x3.5"). A set of 15 different cards featuring an assortment of movie and comic characters, each with my info on the back and card number, to make a little collectible set to sell and give cards away with commissions and such.
Here's a look at the first set (side pic)
I'm selling the complete set of 15 cards for $7.50ea (shipping included). If you're interested in picking up a set, just PayPal funds to jasinmartin@hotmail.com or email me.
I'll try and return soon with a full display of the Marvel Masterpieces series 2 cards I did (all 200)...
SUPER REAL NOTES - Marvel Masterpieces sketch cards
As I've mentioned, I'm in the midst of doing sketch cards for the upcoming Marvel Masterpieces 2 set from Upper Deck, and since I've started to receive approvals for cards that I've done, I thought I'd share some...
Here's a set based on the current Ultimates cast, from Loeb and Madureira's Ultimates 3... And a set based on the new X-Force book... By their nature (you have to return all of the cards they give you, so there's no do-overs), some come out better than others!
I've got some more cool sets done, and will post more as I go!
As I mentioned in my newsletter, I'll be doing 200 sketch cards for the upcoming Upper DeckMarvel Masterpieces card series.
In preperation for that I started creating some of my own custom sketch cards, and offering those on eBay. So far they've been selling pretty quick, they can all be found in my DeviantArt gallery though.
I've recently started a set of X-Men cards... For those that are interested, I can sell them direct, or create custom cards too. Just contact me at jason@superrealgraphics.com
Otherwise, I'll update you once I've started my Masterpieces cards with art and info as I can.
Last year, I got on a Flash Gordon kick, with the new Sci-Fi TV series coming up, I was anxious for that, and revisiting the Flash of my youth.
In 1980 the Flash Gordon movie came out, and I was pumped for it from the first teaser ad on TV. I still remember watching that first trailer, on my parents old black and white (10", 12" ?!?) set, and describing it to them in a rush, down to the colors of the bad guys outfits (red, which of course is a shade of gray on the set, so whatever)... Seeing the movie time and again, it was a childhood favorite, no Star Wars, but certainly up there. Around the same time there was a Flash Gordon cartoon I remember being all excited about too.
Going back and revisiting them, I've only grown to appreciate the movie more, with it's lavish sets and costumes, and it's fun and sexy vibe, it's a visual treat that's only heightened by Queen's epic soundtrack! While the cartoon is of good quality, it's hard to compete with today's animation, and I've yet to get past the first couple episodes.
The new TV show though, was a big letdown. There was no quality treatment like what was bestowed on Battlestar Galactica, just a pale imitation of the concept. It is however passable sci-fi entertainment, but lacking in any real spark that a new generation would fall in love with.
So, before the show launched, amidst my reborn interest with Flash and it's pulpy science fiction roots, I did a sketch inspired by the movie version... which I just resurfaced and finished up with some colors.
In re-Googling reference material to finish it up, I also came across this Japanese movie poster gem... I'd love to do a Flash Gordon comic series, but rather than mess with that, I've found a way to incorporate a concept inspired by it into another project I'm working on for this year!
Just like at conventions, I take commissions online to do artwork up by request, mainly via my online gallery at DeviantArt.com.
Right now I'm offering commissions at half the normal price, to drum up some extra cash. So if you were thinking about contacting me for some kind of art, now's the time.
Here are the details:
Single character (or any reasonable request): $10 for full pencils $15 pencil with marker $20 with digital color
and, I'll even throw in the originals if you add a couple extra bucks for postage!! ($2.50 1st class or $5 priority)
I can also do multi character or more involved pieces, just note for details!!
All requests must be able to Paypal funds to: jasinmartin@hotmail.com
Here's one I've already done (with many more to come):
Just back from Chicago last night, it was a great con, much better than 2 years ago (my first time at the show).
I did quite a few sketches and tried to get some decent pictures, but I really need to get a new camera. So, thought I'd share some of those!
All of these (except Wonder Woman) were done without reference... As you can see, Cherry Darling is a popular request (there were I think 2 more I didn't get pics of), I also sold out of the copies I had of my print of her...
Some of these I'd like to do as a finished drawing if I get the time!
Thanks to everyone who stopped by the table and said hello, and especially those who picked something up, or commissioned a sketch, I really appreciate it! See you at the next show!
Went and saw Transformers last weekend. There have been so many movies this summer, but I thought Transformers was a good one to catch on the big screen. I saw FF2 but missed Spider-Man 3, and unfortunately, it was already gone in all the first run theaters around here (just in the old smaller venues, which defeats the purpose).
Transformers was a lot of fun, it started strong and finished big. Shia, the concept Camaro, and the boom box Decepticon were the highlights, but the movie got seriously lost in the middle and had way too many pointless characters/plotlines (why did we need to continue the thread with the GI's? and Section 7?!? WTF was that?!). The ending was fun, but I thought the Transformers themselves were, while fairly awesome to look at, pretty lifeless. And while the climax, the Autobots and Decepticons going toe to toe in downtown LA was cool, it could've been bigger in scope, and better realized (yes, I know, I'm crazy, but cut a half hour of some of the pointless shit, and give us a more complex, longer, and bigger climax - that's the big payoff, and it was good, but not epic, and it could've/should've been).
So, a B- as a movie, and A- as a theater experience.
Here's my fan art for the movie (which will be a print at next week's San Diego Comic-Con!), the Bumblebee 2009 Camaro with the girl from the movie:
Things have been real quiet on the Super Real front lately, and I know I owe some information (what with issue 4 being solicited for April, and then scheduled for May, and it's June), but until I get things sorted out proper, I don't want to say anything. That will be resolved shortly though.
In the meantime, here's a commissioned work, with Holly under remote control, zombie style.
Thought I'd share a commission I did recently of Buffy the Vampire Slayer... Never really watched the show, but am a fan of Whedon via Fray, Firefly, and Astonishing X-Men. I'm also really enjoying the new Buffy season 8 comics!
MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES... Grinding on GRINDHOUSE!!
Got to see GRINDHOUSE for the second time last night, it was as much of a treat as the first time, the damn thing throws so much cool shit at you, a second viewing is practically mandatory (or third, fourth, etc).
It's visual nirvana. The thing I really keyed in on the second time was the soundtrack. Both RR's Planet Terror score, masterful 80's synth echoing that blistering theme throughout, and of course QT's best soundtrack since the remarkable Pulp Fiction collection. I bought the Death Proof soundtrack, and can attest it's really great (I'll have to pick up the Planet Terror too).
So speaking of visual nirvana, and my obsession with all things Grindhouse, here's a collection of fan arts for the movie/s, complete with links to the creators. A fine assortment of interpretaions of the films array of inspiring and iconic characters!!!
Please share any cool one's you've seen that I might have missed!
