SUPER REAL NOTES: Graphic Novel recommended by ComicsBulletin

The Super Real graphic novel was just reviewed by another comics site, this time ComicsBulletin.com

And it's another rave review:

"Super Real seems to be breaking at the seams with the excitement that Martin puts into his work. There's a ridiculous amount of personality in every line of his manga-influenced artwork and in the way he presents his characters and stories.

This was a really wonderfully fun comic with nice art and a very shocking ending. I really enjoyed it."

And in response to the overall story, and new final act:
"I kind of dropped the book, shocked, when finishing it. I love the feeling that you never quite know what will happen, and Martin definitely delivers that."

SUPER REAL NOTES: Graphic Novel recommended by AICN!

Just posted this AM on Aint It Cool News, the Super Real GN/TP gets reviewed HERE

They've supported the book all along, and reading the full story has only reinforced their recommendation,
"If there’s one thing that I know about SUPER REAL is that it’s a book that is about having fun with its premise and it’s a book where the creator’s enthusiasm for his own project just bleeds off of the page. Martin’s passion is infectious and it’s pretty much what makes SUPER REAL the enjoyable read that it is."
And going on to say,
"just know that SUPER REAL is well worth your time and money"

SUPER REAL NOTES: GN recommended by BleedingCool!

As you know, the Super Real GN is due in comic book shops starting this week and next (see below for full info), and I found out the morning that Rich Johnston's buzzworthy comic site, BleedingCool.com, features the book on their new "shipping forecast" column, where they highlight the 10 coolest books due out for the week!!

Super Real TPB by Jason Martin with just as smidgen of Josh Howard and Jim Mahfood, this mashup of reality TV and superheroics is raw, brash, terribly sexual and rather fun.

Check out the full column HERE

Thanks Rich!

SUPER REAL NOTES: Graphic Novel done!

Okay, production on the graphic novel (and it's 82 new pages) has been done for a couple weeks, BUT, the book has also been printed, AND delivered to Diamond. So that means, there's nothing (barring an act of god) to keep it from reaching store shelves within a couple weeks!!

So, it's DONE.

What seems like longer than I can remember, has actually been a year long process, as the book was originally solicited for July 2009, which means I set it up with Diamond last March. Then, entering last summer, as the new content was clearly going to run twice as long as expected, I was forced to re solicit, for January. And, as you know, January has come and gone, and now indeed February. However, close to twelve months of sweat, stress, and fears later, I'm supremely relieved to have this book done. The Super Real graphic novel not only represents a good part of the last year of my life, but also a better chunk of this century, as I started creating the book around 2000 - forming a group super hero style concept, and beginning to rediscover my abandoned artistic abilities, and in earnest in 2003, when I put together a preview ash can and did my first comic convention, the 2003 San Diego Comic-Con.

A lot has happened, and changed since July of 2003. Comic-Con for instance, only had attendance of around 63,000 at the time, and only occupied about 3/4 of the con hall. Since then it's doubled and been capped in attendance, and has long burst at the facilities seems. The first preview night all those years ago, I met a producer from a studio who was keen to develop Super Real, and have since talked with a few other Hollywood types. The book I thought I'd put out bi-monthly later that year, didn't officially come out until almost 2 and a half years later, when Super Real was finally set up with Diamond. With it's first issue coming out in November of 2005, and each subsequent issue taking longer to release, until the fifth book, the second special issue, came out in January of 2008.

That's right, five issues, the last of which was barely published in 2008, making it more than two years since the last appearance in comic shops! A one year hiatus for the series, followed by a one year production for the graphic novel (and new content/series conclusion)...
Of course, November of last year saw a direct edition of the new sixth issue, and in a couple weeks, we'll see the final seventh issue released directly by me as well (both books available in print or digital).

So November 2005 to March 2010, almost five years for seven issues (or 230 pages, the equivalent to roughly 10 standard size comic issues). I could have never expected a production schedule like that back all those years ago, but irregardless, the story I set out tell, about a group of irresponsible 20-somethings, given special abilities that run wild, is what I ultimately accomplished. All while learning about this rapidly changing industry, polishing my craft, and keeping a part time job and pursuing a myriad of other creative efforts.

For those that have followed along all this time, you have my eternal gratitude, and for those that will discover Super Real now that it's reborn as a graphic novel, with 232 pages of story (again, 82 of which are brand new), slightly retouched dialogue, and colorized VS the comic industry special pages, welcome!

I'll update as soon as possible with official street dates, but the book will most likely be in comic shops on 3/17, and available from me in person at Emerald City Comicon and via the website, starting 3/14.

For those that have been waiting for preorders with the limited sketch plates, they will begin shipping in the next week.
For those who want to get the sketch plate edition (limited to 100 copies), you can still place a preorder, or pick up a sketch plate edition from me at cons (see con schedule on right sidebar), while supplies last!

And as I mentioned, for those just looking to get the single issues, six is available now in print and digital PDF, and the issue seven PDF can be found now, with the print version by month's end.

Stay tuned for more info!

While we wait for the graphic novel to come out in January, those following in single issue format can pick up the first giant-sized part of the two part finale, issue number 6, which is available now (in print and digital from the website), and with the final part, issue 7, set to release in late December.

So, besides the first 8 pages which have been previewed on the website and around the web, I thought I'd share some art from key pages of the issue (that also don't give too much away). Here's the first, page 12...

SUPER REAL NOTES: Comic Geek Speak interview, AICN previews, DCBS promo

A collection of Super Real GN/issue 6 news and notes:

FIRST) Just posted on Comic Geek Speak, their latest podcast episode, the Previews show (where they run through the current issue of Previews), the CGS crew were kind enough to have me on for a few minutes at the tail end of the show to talk about the rescheduled Super Real GN (and we also talked a bit about digital comics).

You can tune into the episode below

Or HERE at the CGS site.

The interview starts at the 1:30:00 mark of the episode and runs about 8 minutes.

SECOND) AintItCoolNews.com's weekly "Shoot the Messenger" column the past two weeks has featured Super Real previews...

Last week they featured 8 pages from the new sixth issue, which you can see HERE

And this week they feature the full newly colored 6 page Jim Mahfood section from the graphic novel HERE

THIRD) The good folks of DCBService.com (Discount Comic Book Service) are offering the graphic novel through their site at a 40% discount (that's $11.39 instead of $18.99), and also including an original sketch plate, from myself, with each copy they sell!!!
If you use the service, or would like to check it out, you can check that offer out HERE

(This is similar to the offer I have on the book's site, where you also get a sketch plate, but with free shipping on the book's full price.)

Stay tuned for more!

SUPER REAL NOTES: Super Real Graphic Novel rescheduled, new issue out now

Okay folks, time for some updates on the overdue release of the Super Real Graphic novel (and final issue special). As you may know, the GN was solicited for July via Diamond distribution and comic shops, then rescheduled to September, which came and went almost a month ago... with no GN, or special issue released.

Well, turns out the production ran long. In addition to retouching the existing material, and coloring the black and white special, production of the new content, the final issue special that completes the first story arc, and closes out the GN, that was planned as 48 pages, shaped up to be closer to 80 pages. So, being unable to complete that in time for the September schedule with Diamond, I opted to resolicit the GN, not wanting to rush the new pages, or leave them out of the book altogether. The new schedule has the GN being offered to comic shops for this January via the new November Previews catalog.

If you originally ordered a copy via your comic shop, please be sure they reorder the book from the new Previews catalog. The book is listed in the comics and graphic novels section, page 260, now via Diamond order code NOV09 0909.

The graphic novel will now contain an additional 30 pages of story, in one 250 plus page, full color volume, for the same original $18.99 price point. Yep, 30 extra pages for free!!

As for the new special issue, for those looking to pick up the story in single issue/comic book format, with the climax running an extra 30 pages, it will now be released in two parts. Part 1 will now be issue number 6, with 56 pages, and full color, for the same cover price as the special issue, of $6.99. That's 8 extra pages, and now in color instead of black and white, for the same price. Issue 6 is available now, via the SRG.com STORE both in print and digital, as well as comic shops via Haven Distribution (order code SUPRSUP101).

Part 2, the series conclusion, will be released as a 32 page issue 7 this December.

As always, thanks for all the support!
With the book's hiatus, and now delays in the GN and new issue release, it's been almost 2 years between issues!! But, the massive 56 page new issue is here, with the some big revelations in our story, and plenty of action, carnage, and more shocks and surprises to come!
So grab your copy now, or wait a couple months for the whole thing in the graphic novel!

You can of course find more info, previews, and everything at the book's site.

SUPER REAL NOTES: CBR interview and GN update!

Been slammed beyond infinity, and someone forwarded me a link to this, but have not gotten to posting it around...

I did an interview for Comic Book Resources a while back, and they ran it last week HERE

It's centered around Super Real, and the Graphic Novel, and it touches on other stuff too, but mainly I shoot straight about what's what with the book, and how it got to where it's at, format and schedule wise...
It's reformatted in a funky quote laden expose of sorts, and has a couple wonky facts (mainly A) the final issue is being published digitally via SRG and in print via Haven, and B) SRG has always been the publishing company, but only started offering other products, outside Super Real, in 2008), but is a good summary of where we're at with the book and what's to come!
And yes, the book is late.
I scheduled it for July with the hopes of having it for the big cons, but it was too much to finish for that, and got further delayed when I had to drop it for weeks doing the shows, but it's back on track and nearing completion.

It (the graphic novel) will be out in September (along with the final issue), and Diamond will have it out to shops per the original terms and all that. No worries.
It is indeed coming, and SOON!
I promise :)

From there it's over to launch Pulp Girls
Plus there's other exciting stuff moving forward too!!!

STAY TUNED
Lots of cool stuff coming VERY SOON!!!

SUPER REAL NOTES: Super Real in Front magazine

I was recently alerted to the fact that Super Real made an appearance in UK magazine, Front, in the new July issue. Apparently there was a section that included a model holding the Movie Industry Special Jonboy Meyeres "Kill Bill" cover...

Upon seeing a scan of the page, turns out the book is indeed pictured, in a section detailing a models embracing of all things geek, and references comics "with big tits and/or zombies" in the "What I Does Love This Month" section with accompanying Super Real cover...

So there ya go.

Cool to see the book getting some love, whatever the case may be ;)

Have a look!

SUPER REAL NOTES: Newsarama interview

We interrupt your regularly schedule broadcast for this news update...

Land of the Lost is out today (and looks to have reviews on par with the flat attempts at humor on exhibit in the ads)...

Initial sales numbers are in, and the Super Real Graphic Novel is locked in at Diamond (I know this may not seem like much of a statement, but in today's market, and with their new thresholds, nothing is guaranteed)...

Oh, and an interview I did with Newsarama's Chris Arrant over a month ago finally went live!!
Newsarama is the industries leading news source, so check that out HERE

The interview is centered on the graphic novel release, but covers the entire scope of self publishing the series, and publishing comics in general, and I think came out really well! Be sure and check that out!

STAY TUNED

SUPER REAL NOTES: Graphic Novel new colors 2

This week I'm doing a little show and tell of the production for the Super Real graphic novel collection, and focusing on the inclusion of the Super Real VS The Comic Book Industry special issue, which was originally in black and white, but will now be in color.

There were five sections in the special, each by a different artist, and my section was in color (of sorts) already, so that left four sections needing color, with no time on my schedule to do it.

Yesterday we looked at samples of the first section, and today we'll focus on another, the section by Edward Pun, who worked in a manga style, as his section pit our cast member Kit against Poke-Zap, a Pokeman stand-in.

It was also one of the sections I filled via an open call, so today, here are the two sample pages I received for the section...

So that's Ed's lineart (with grayscale), and sample 1 by Jesus Alessandro Esparza Hurtado, and sample 2 by Fabián Cobos...

Both samples were cool, but quite similar, so I had a tough time picking. Stay tuned to see some future samples from the selected artist!

And again, a big thanks to everyone who took the time to do up some samples, and color some pages!

Tune in tomorrow for more before and after from new colorists on new artists!

SUPER REAL NOTES: Graphic Novel new colors

When I started to setup Super Real in one graphic novel collection, I knew right away, that with the collected format being in color, there was an opportunity to go back and colorize our first special, Super Real VS The Comic Book Industry, as it was originally printed in black and white. However, I also knew, with everything else that needed done, I wouldn't have time to color the pages myself. Even though, since it featured 4 sequences by guest artists Jim Mahfood, The Boo, Daniel Campos, and Edward Pun, it would've been a lot of fun to color all those different artists. So, I asked a couple folks if they were interested, and decided to try putting out an open call to the DeviantArt.com community, for the remaining sections.

Over the next few days, I'll share some of the newly colored pages here, starting with the three folks who were kind enough to submit color samples for the two open sections (by Daniel, and Ed). As you'll see, I found some cool artists, and I really appreciate them taking the effort to try out for a non paying gig like this.

Today I'll show our first selection, by Oliver Lee Arce, and his colors over Daniel Campos' first page from the special...

A side by side comparison, from inks, to colors, and letters...

As you can see, his colors really bring the page to life, and also are full of unique touches. Very nice!

If anyone else wants to play with colors on the pages, feel free, just click on the ink image, and let me know so I can post your results here (just remember the slots for the book are already filled!).

Tune in tomorrow, and we'll share the two submissions we got for Edward's section, and then after that, some of the cool colors provided by friends!

STAY TUNED!

SUPER REAL NOTES: Double-sized finale special

Yesterday I talked about the Super Real graphic novel, that you can currently pre-order for later this summer, which includes the entire series, but some of you may be wondering about the final issues that haven't come out yet?

Well, I'm happy to say fans of the book who don't necessarily want to buy the graphic novel, can get the climax of our genetically powered reality TV tale this summer as well. The final two issues will be available as one over-sized 48 page book, Super Real: Cast Change, either in comic book shops via Haven Distribution, or directly from Super Real Graphics, both in print or PDF download (more info on this option to come)!

Here's the book info:
SUPER REAL: Cast Change SPECIAL
48 pages, b&w, mature readers - $6.99
Pre order now – May Haven Comics! Catalog

Our reality show cast were promised million dollar payouts for participation, but now a bold change to the show’s format via a controversial new cast member has them reeling... If their fifteen minutes of fame, and cash reward are cut short, will anyone survive?!?
It’s all out war in this brand new super-sized conclusion to the popular independent series that mashes-up pop culture with comic book mayhem, and features a character inspired by the most popular man on Earth - Barack Obama, who completes the book’s trinity of Presidential likenesses (with Bush and Cheney already in place as the show’s producers)!

This is not a marketing stunt dear readers, this is the only conclusion our tale could possibly have!! Don’t miss it!!!

Your local comic book retailer will have a copy of the Haven Distribution catalog, Comics!, in May (and you should be able to have them order you a copy), but you can also order it yourself directly from Haven if you like (there are tons of cool independent retailers listed in the catalog, but it is new, this is the first issue):
The catalog can be pre-ordered through www.havendistro.com. It's shown on the front page of the cart once you login (you can use guest/guest to see it).

Super Real: Cast Change will be an advance order item in the catalog, so I'll give an update once the book is available (early summer). And again, you can get the issue on it's own, or as part of the graphic novel, later in the summer.

Check out and stay tuned for more info at the book's site HERE

SUPER REAL NOTES: Super Real on again, off again

Okay, this update is a bit late, as the current Diamond Previews catalog came out over a week ago now, but with Wondercon last weekend and prepping for it last week, I simply ran out of time to touch on this until now...

Super Real: Cast Change, aka issue four, aka the final issue, will NOT be released via Diamond.

As many know, Diamond recently changed their sales thresholds for independent publishers, and this issue of Super Real, although approved after the change was announced by Diamond, was still a casualty of it. Why it was initially approved, only to be undone, after I'd begun communicating the books release, is unfortunate, and frustrating, but simply how it came about.

So, even though I'd previously announced the book would be solicited in the March Previews catalog, for a May release to comic book shops via Diamond distribution, that is no longer the case.

The comic book direct market has been evolving into a more difficult landscape for independent books to achieve any kind of success for years, and that is increasingly becoming more the case. This latest change from Diamond only escalates that. Since Super Real was set up with Diamond in late 2005, the market has gotten tougher and tougher, with the large publishers, Marvel and DC, focusing their efforts on massive crossovers, and weekly books, etc, to suck up as many dollars as possible. Couple that with rising cover prices (Super Real number 1 was $3.25, a then high price point in November of 2005, and a standard color comic is now $3.99), a crashing economy, and a massive amount of competing material, and the writing was on the wall. There was not a future for Super Real as a periodical in the direct market (and in fact, increasingly, no market for periodical comics outside of Marvel and DC). I had hoped though, to combine the final 2 issues of our story into one release and complete what I had started. That will not be happening though, at least via Diamond, and for that I'm truly sorry.

However, it is not the end for Super Real, as I've mentioned time and again, it was always a closed-ended story arc, and I'm fully dedicated to finishing that story, both for me, and of course, the fans. It just means it will be reaching the public in a different way. I will still complete the super-sized cast change special, our sixth issue overall (aka Episode VI: The Cast Strike Back), and fourth and fifth regular series issues in essence. It will most likely be released both directly via print (online, at conventions, and in comic shops via Haven Distribution), but also for download online via the website. In roughly the same time frame as originally intended for Diamond Distribution. I will of course announce once schedules and plans are finalized.

Additionally, I hope to offer the complete series as a collected trade paperback/graphic novel. More on that later.

So, again, I'm sorry if you're awaiting the book, and this is another set back, but in time it will see release, and we'll all get to have some closure to our story. Then hopefully, down the road, when we look in the rear view, all of this will be irrelevant, and we'll have what I hope is a unique comic story and vision all can be proud of, that fans new and old can discover moving forward.

The future is now with comics, and I'm ready and willing to embrace it. It just came a touch sooner than I and others had expected. These are exciting times though, and with digital and new formats and models of delivery, the future is definitely bright!

Thanks as always for your support, and STAY TUNED!
Jason

We're all neighbors in artist alley along with my man Dave Dwonch of Gnome fame, and Gnome cover artist Super Ugly.

SUPER REAL NOTES: Making comics

So, want to be a part of the glamorous world of comic book publishing?

You might have heard me talk about a book I'm publishing, Super Real Graphics Presents: The Wolves of Odin? It's due out later this month.

As it's full color, and perfect bound (i.e. it has a spine) the books are printed overseas (so that the price is affordable). With it printed on another continent (you know, like Africa, as in not a country, not actually Africa either, but a different continent folks) that means the books must ship to our part of the world, and since we're doing this all in the effort of cost, that means by boat.

So, you're printing overseas, and shipping the books back to America (which also means longer lead times btw), you don't just need to get the books to the US, but to you and your distributor specifically. Being located on the west coast, Portland Oregon, you'd think they could ship the books to you, but no dice. Seattle is as close as they can boat the freight, it then has to move by land to you (or Diamond). Well, when I first used an overseas printer, moving the freight 175 miles south from Seattle to Portland was only a small extra amount, but when I printed SRG Presents Gnome this spring, the prices had gone up, drastically. So, it was an extra $600 to move the freight to me (and then, again, I still have to ship copies to Diamond on top of that). So, that means I have to drive up to Seattle, in my Jeep Cherokee, and pick up the books myself, and save about $500. A tank or so of gas, and about 6 hours work, makes it all worth it.

So, after chasing down the freight for days (once it gets' to the states, it then has to clear customs, and that requires the printer and freight companies all working together, and sharing proper documentation etc, which, in this case, they didn't) today was the first I could get to the books, and since they're due in shops this month, and have to ship to Diamond, and then move to their proper distribution centers, before shipping to shops, time is of the essence. Well, it just happened that today we were in the midst of 2 days of rain storms...
Yes, it rains allot in the Northwest, and especially on that stretch of I-5, but our rain is normally of the lighter variety, so monsoon downpours were just a nice touch :)

Here's my Jeep, with the full thousand pound, 31 case, pallet loaded inside, straight from the forklift...
Just a glimpse into the fabulous life of comic publishing.
Any way, the good news is, Wolves of Odin is on it's way!

IN CASE U MISSED IT: Javiland podcast

Yesterday, I joined in on another conversation over at my buddy Javier Hernandez's bi-weekly TalkShoe.com comics creation podcast, Javiland. This time, along with about four other creators we discussed "Printing comic books in the Age of Web Comics".

Talking about POD (print on demand), mini comics, and not really talking about full and short run comic book printing, as we mostly got into threads about webcomics. Lots of info if you haven't looked into publishing on or via the web.

You can check it out here:

SUPER REAL NOTES: Marvel Masterpieces 2 artist proof cards

My first sketch card work was for Upper Deck's Marvel Masterpieces series 2, for which I did 200 sketch cards. As part of the payment for the set, each sketch card artist received 10 "artist proof" sketch cards to do what they wished with. I received my cards back in August, and posted commission availability here, on DeviantArt, and on the Scoundrel sketch card forums. I received 3 commissions, and sold 1 via eBay.

Since I had 6 cards left to sell, and a deadline to get them approved by Upper Deck/Marvel, I went ahead and tried doing my first 2 card set, making one image across 2 cards, and offering that on eBay. I was pleased to sell those cards within a couple hours of posting via buy it now, a set of the classic Uncanny X-Men, so I decided to work up another 2 card set for eBay. This time I did a grouping of Avengers women, and those sold by the next morning. With 2 cards left, I went ahead and did a third 2 card set, with this last being of women from the X-Men. Those cards are currently (at this time) on eBay, HERE and HERE

Here are all of the MM2 artist proofs I've done (the final 10th card is commissioned, and I'll add it here once it's completed):
X-Women
Avengers Women
Uncanny X-Men
Banshee
Professor X
and Nova!

You can view most of my 200 MM2 series sketch cards HERE (or in my DeviantArt gallery)

I did 75 sketch cards for series 3, which you can view HERE, and will have 10 artist proof cards to share from that eventually as well. I've currently only sold one of those, so nine are still available (email me if interested). Just as with the MM2 ap's, I'll start auctioning off my own custom works on eBay...

Since the artist proof's have been working out pretty well, I look forward to working on more sketch cards in the future. It's not only fun to draw Marvel characters, as I'm a Marvel guy from way back, but working on the 2.5x3.5" canvas, in live media, is very interesting too (as opposed to working digitally on an open canvas). Not to mention, there are plenty of other cool card/licensed properties out there!

Here's hoping.

IN CASE U MISSED IT: Javiland podcast

Yesterday, I joined in on a coversation about branding on my buddy Javier Hernandez's new bi-weekly TalkShoe.com comics creation podcast, Javiland. Along with four other artists, cartoonists, creators, we discussed branding and how it relates to both publishing comics, and creators themselves, debating the many challenges of getting across a "brand" through your work.

You can check it out here:

Branding is something I feel is key in a visual medium like comics. Just look at the most popular publishers, and creators, they all have very distinct brands, either through cult of personality (Stan Lee, Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison etc), unique approach (artists like Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, and the late Michael Turner, to name a few, stand out in the crowd by making their art their brand), and the large publishers, with thier everpresent branding and trademarked mulit-media superhero properties.

Finding your brand, and cultivating it, only reinforces your efforts, and can lead to wider success and recognition.

To an artist/creator seeking commercial success, branding is key, and can only help.
