ARTWORK: Adult Swim 2010 calendar

Earlier this year I did a Venture Brothers (the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim animated series) fan art featuring Molotov Cocktease, as a faux old school comic book cover, and as fans of the show tend to be a bit rabid (it's a good, quirky show), the image was rather popular... fast forward to this fall, and I was contacted by Adult Swim, who were interested in using the image for a 2010 Adult Swim calendar they were putting together.

So that's cool.

They explained the calendar was going to feature each of the different AS shows, as a different comic book style cover each month, so this was a perfect fit.

Now, I recently was sent a couple copies of the calendar, and the theme is more "comics", as in strip, page or image, than covers, but there you go.

They just recently put the calendars on the AS site (and all the promo stuff I've seen feature my image), but I still haven't seen them posted in the store. You can currently try to win a copy HERE

The calendars aren't mass marketed or anything, just available directly from AS on their site, and as soon as that's posted, I'll link to it.

Also, they mentioned possibly making some prints out of the images, but I haven't heard or seen anything more on that.

In the meantime, you can take a look at the artwork (above), and some a pics of the calendar (below, with crappy old digital cam)...

COMMISSION TIME - NYC Zombies!

I recently had the pleasure of doing a full blown multi character commission, with the request being that it had a similar vibe to my Cloverfield fan art, a group shot in an urban setting... but with zombies!

The requester didn't even want specific zombies, ie Cloverfield cast, superheroes, etc, just regular zombies. So to wrap my mind around it, I decided to use one of my actual pics from my recent NYCC trip, and the idea started to come to life, using a pic from Times Square, it would be "zombies on Broadway"!

Specifically, using this pic
The next challenge was what would inspire my zombies? Now, I've drawn some before (most notably an unused zombie variant of the issue 3 cover for Super Real special number 1), but not enough to just crank out the cool zombie action, so I needed a little direction to avoid some generic looking zombies... Then it occured to me to use whatever current pop culture stuff was rattling around my brain... and this was a few weeks back and I'd just watched the EliteXC MMA Saturday Night Fights on CBS, and brawler Kimbo Slice seemed the perfect subject!

From there, the rest of the zombies fell in place...
Zombie Downey JR, fresh off his triumphant appearance at the MTV movie awards

Zombie Lohan, also at the MTV awards, seemed a natural (and was really fun)!
But that left me wanting to do one more zombie, and fresh out of inspiration... then it hit me, myself as a zombie of course!

And so you have the final piece, with our cast of zombies making their way down Broadway... along with some adjustments to the pic...
Check it out!

Big thanks to the client for paying me to play with zombies, it was really fun!

I SAW IT ON TV: Lost 4.end

If you're as big a Lost fan as me, then last night was a big one.
The show is top notch all around, but they really go all out with each season finale, from blowing the lids of mysterious hatches, to giant 4 toed statue foot remnants, to mind bending flash forwards... the finales pack a wallop.

So how about season 4, last nights wrap up?

While not as crazy as season 2 or 3, it is a slow burner, stacked with plenty, and plenty, of tasty morsels.

I won't go into all of it, but man, I'm still in love with this show, and can't wait (8 months) for more!

If you follow the show and haven't checked it out yet EW.com's Doc Jensen is an indispensable source of scholarly Lost knowledge, check out season 4's finale wrap up HERE

DeviantArt - Cloverfield fan art

As I mentioned in my Cloverfield write up, I did complete my fan art for the movie this weekend. You can check it out at my DeviantArt gallery...

As you can see, I went with a cast shot, as opposed to featuring the "monster". It was a lot of fun!

DeviantArt - Flash Gordon

Last year, I got on a Flash Gordon kick, with the new Sci-Fi TV series coming up, I was anxious for that, and revisiting the Flash of my youth.

In 1980 the Flash Gordon movie came out, and I was pumped for it from the first teaser ad on TV. I still remember watching that first trailer, on my parents old black and white (10", 12" ?!?) set, and describing it to them in a rush, down to the colors of the bad guys outfits (red, which of course is a shade of gray on the set, so whatever)...
Seeing the movie time and again, it was a childhood favorite, no Star Wars, but certainly up there. Around the same time there was a Flash Gordon cartoon I remember being all excited about too.

Going back and revisiting them, I've only grown to appreciate the movie more, with it's lavish sets and costumes, and it's fun and sexy vibe, it's a visual treat that's only heightened by Queen's epic soundtrack!
While the cartoon is of good quality, it's hard to compete with today's animation, and I've yet to get past the first couple episodes.

The new TV show though, was a big letdown. There was no quality treatment like what was bestowed on Battlestar Galactica, just a pale imitation of the concept. It is however passable sci-fi entertainment, but lacking in any real spark that a new generation would fall in love with.

So, before the show launched, amidst my reborn interest with Flash and it's pulpy science fiction roots, I did a sketch inspired by the movie version... which I just resurfaced and finished up with some colors.

In re-Googling reference material to finish it up, I also came across this Japanese movie poster gem...
I'd love to do a Flash Gordon comic series, but rather than mess with that, I've found a way to incorporate a concept inspired by it into another project I'm working on for this year!
